What's Special About The University of Utah Medical School?

Curriculum

The U of U Medical School has recently changed its curriculum.  Here is a taste of their new plan:

"...we have designed a new curriculum that improves curricular integration, provides early clinical exposure, guides students through increasingly complex clinical situations and allows for expansion of medical class size. While not modeled after any individual

other institution, it incorporates new approaches to education that have been implemented in a variety of the other medical schools. It will place greater emphasis on competency based student assessments and will improve the coordination of teaching by an identified core of faculty members. The major changes include the following:

Courses will no longer be organized around traditional academic disciplines corresponding to administrative departments. Instead, sections of the curriculum will be organized around clinical topics, with elements of Medical Science, Medical Arts, and Clinical Medicine used to teach each topic in an integrated format.

The first two years of the curriculum will consist of an introduction followed by seven sections addressing clinical topic areas.

Integration of material will be managed by pairs of basic scientist and clinician directors who will be responsible for assembling appropriate teaching faculty to deliver appropriate educational content. These directors will be responsible for the construction and coordination of the new curriculum. Later the directors will be responsible for maintenance, ongoing assessment, and modification of the curriculum. They will be required to commit a major part of their academic time to the curriculum.

Students will gain exposure to clinical practice from the beginning of their training. Progression will be from simulations and standardized patients to real patients in increasingly complex situations from ambulatory care to tertiary care settings. Basic sciences will be taught throughout the curriculum, integrated with and reinforcing concepts of best clinical practice.

Student assessment methods that evaluate competence in patient care and self evaluation will be enhanced.

Greater emphasis will be placed on assigning faculty mentors to students

Students will be required to engage in an independent scholarly activity

Students will be required to engage in community service activities

Faculty will be mentored more in how to be effective educators"
