Patient Exposure

Another important part of your application is patient exposure. Medical Schools want to know that you know what it is like to work with patients. They want to know that you like working with patients and know what you are getting in to. This stems from the problems medical schools have encountered when they accepted people solely on academics and found that some of their students dropped out of medical school once they got to their clinical rotations because they hated working with sick people.

So pick some activity that is going to allow you to interact with patients in a clinical setting so you can show admissions committees that you do know what it is like to work with sick people, and you want to do that for your career. Some possible options are getting a job in any type of clinical setting or volunteering in a clinical setting. Avoid counting your job shadowing as patient exposure because patients often treat you differently when you are with a doctor. Try instead to get direct one on one interaction with patients.

As far as the amount of patient exposure you need goes, as long as you can show them that your exposure has been sufficient for you to know what you are getting into, you should be fine. However, like every other part of your application, the more the merrier. Get enough! Leave no doubt in the admissions committees’ minds about your patient exposure.
