Technological Safety Net for Fall-Prone Elderly

Falls are the leading cause of injury among the elderly, and the ability to get help when needed can sometimes be the difference between life and death. Poor eyesight, stroke, circulatory problems and debilitating diseases such as Parkinson’s can make everyday tasks difficult and dangerous. Often after falls, people can be knocked unconscious or injured in a way that they cannot get help.

A team of European researchers part of SensAction-AAL, a project funded by the EU, have created a wireless device equipped with motion sensors and accelerometers, that is worn around the waist and is designed to alert doctors via SMS messaging or email in the event of an unrecoverable fall. The device is able to detect falls and differentiate between other actions with a high degree of accuracy. In addition, it provides caregivers with long-term, and highly-detailed data about a patient’s mobility, which may reveal hidden conditions. In trials conducted, participants reported an increased quality of life, including boosts to self confidence and reductions in overall stress level.
